Shh.... Can you keep a secret?

Tina Glasneck
Welcome to Murderer's Market! Have you ever had a secret that you kept so close to your chest that you could barely breathe when you thought about it; a secret so near and dear that you wished and hoped that no one would ever find out?

I've been doing a lot of soul-searching, and maybe it has to do with me scaring people around me by my twisted plot ideas (don't worry, more stories are on the way) and recently, I discovered the show on the I.D. channel called Dark Minds. Basically, a journalist investigates cold cases and when he needs insight into a killer's mind, he contacts an inmate, named Raven, who provides certain details about the criminal mind and specifically the killer's mind.

I think this show is interesting, and I am not about to dig into the scenarios of if that all makes sense, because unlike that show, I know what it is like to look into a killer's eyes and see death.

Let me explain. I'm a criminal paralegal, and have been interested in law since forever. Now, in my field, I don't care if one is guilty or innocent. That is not my job. My job is not to be the moral police; my job is to make sure that the rights of the accused are not tossed to the side under a simple  accusation. In other words, my job is to assist the attorney in ensuring that the accused is not railroaded.

I'm not a regular paralegal, I assume. Attorneys that I've worked with have called me a para-attorney, because I don't look at things as a paralegal does, but like an attorney - looking for the clues in the cases, and finding the case law to back up my point.

Okay, I've gotten off track again.

You see the thing about my writing is that not only can I create the mystery of who did it; the motive of why it was done; and, then I can walk the line of if the accused is truly the one behind the crime. I take my world and jumble it up (never using any of the information from any case I've worked on); for in my world of writing I get to be what I've always wanted to be.

A crime solver.

That is where the mystery element comes in. Since I've always had to deal with looking for clues, and at the evidence, trying to piece the truth together, I enjoy solving the questions, answering them and giving what could be a pretty meaningless crime  a motive.

Empathy

In my field of expertise, I've learned that everyone has a story. Maybe that is a result of my theological background, but I've learned that when I start to see people as being sub-human, that is a step in making me less human, as well. You can't demonize someone just because. We all have a story and walk in a gray world.

The world can be a cruel place, and there will always be an excuse for something or another, but as long as the dark creatures continue to walk the night, there will be people like me searching for ways to bring justice.

Yes, I have a secret.

I'm a literary superhero.

I create criminals to only then capture them...

So, what is your secret?

  1. So, Tina, do you have a superhero costume? Your superpower is your talent and that's a 1-2 punch that'll rock the readers' world. Enjoyed another glimpse into your process and your psyche. It's not as scarey in there as you'd have us believe. Or at least not the public parts, eh? LOL

    1. If I get too dark, and let all the monsters come out, who will quash them? I like to think of myself as a nice mixture. To fight evil, you have to know what it is...even in fiction. :)

  2. How interesting, Tina. I wasn't aware of how much your job fit into your writing. I like getting to know you better through your blog (and in person too!)Keep this up!
Sorry this is so late, I'm catching up on blogs today.
