Where's the sisterhood?

At our blog, we pride ourselves on being authors who write intelligent, strong, positive heroines. As a group of bloggers, we work to support each other in our publishing careers. When you are around these types of women, you forget that not all women are treated in the same manner. Three stories this week make that issue abundantly clear.

First, Disney faced a maelstrom of criticism with their choice to give Merida, from the movie Brave, a makeover.

Original Merida

"Makeover" Merida

Second, H&M rolled out their summer campaign featuring a model more in line with the average American woman, only to face comments that she’s too fat and she needs to lose weight.

Finally, an Oklahoma City Thunder NBA cheerleader, was called out on a blog post, written by a woman, for being “too chunky.” The passive aggressive nature of the post is a thin veil for its meanness. The blogger thinks the cheerleader is beautiful, but she's just "discussing what men like." Did this post even need to be written?

The lack of sisterhood is disturbing and it’s very pervasive. Even on something like reality competitions where the American public votes, most of the winners turn out to be “attractive” boys, the magnet for the tween/teen girls who tend to vote. While watching Good Morning America on Friday, where they were discussing this week’s Dancing with the Stars finale, an anchor mentioned she thought the lone male left standing would win because young girls are the ones “who vote.” On shows like Survivor, where alliances are important, you rarely see women align together, even when they have the numbers on their side.

Am I the lone “conspiracist,” foil hat and all, for seeing a link between these stories? Or am I a seeing a problem where none exists?

And the Oscar for Best Dressed goes to...blah...blah...blah

The Oscars are known for running long and being boring, but the fashions add a must-needed zing to the festivities.

Not this year.

Between the long opening monologue (not you, my pretty Channing), the dreadful Catherine Zeta-Jones "Chicago" number and the Jaws-theme cut-off music, for anyone not in an actor category, it was a pitiful finale to the awards season.

And the fashions... they were tedious, un-inspired and safe. Gah.

So I protest. Oh, I'm still going to name the best and worst dressed, but the reveal doesn't deserve my usual witty commentary or intelligent observations. When they bring their "A" game, so will I.

Best Dressed:

Jessica Chastain in Armani Prive.

Worst Dressed:

Helen Hunt in H&M.
I know I said I wasn't going to say anything, but... those are wrinkles in the front of her dress. WRINKLES!! You don't buy Oscar dresses from H&M!!!

And, in a "Bitch Stole My Look" moment (Hello, Fashion Police!) Charlize Theron, in Christian Dior Haute Couture, stole her Oscar look from Anne Hathaway's (Chanel) Golden Globe look.

Yawn.

I'm sorry we didn't have the kick-ass fashion finale I imagined. Let's hope Hollywood does better next year.

Did you watch the 2013 Oscars? Do you agree with my assessment? What was your favorite part of the ceremony?

See you next month!

The Grammys!

On February 10, 2013, recording artists convened at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for "Music's Biggest Night", the 55th annual Grammy awards. It was an interesting night for a couple of reasons. One, it had been a year since the death of Whitney Houston cast a pall over the proceedings and two, everyone was abuzz about The Memo, sent to all the attendees dictating their dress:

"Please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered. Thong type costumes are problematic. Please avoid exposing bare flesh under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack. Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic. Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples. Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible puffy bare skin exposure."

Rockstars aren't known for their restraint. I was interested to see if they would comply with the new wardrobe restrictions. Some did, some didn't.

Kelly Rowland in Georges Chakra. For easy open, pull here...

Jennifer Lopez in Anthony Vaccarello , who said she abided by the letter of the memo. Uh-huh.

Katy Perry in Gucci Resort 2013: no outer or under boob, just inner boob.

I can't say I was wowed by the fashions at this year's ceremony, but I do have one award to give away:

My "What was she thinking?" award goes to Rihanna...

I thought she looked beautiful in her scarlet Azzedine Alaia gown. But her arm accessory was problematic and I'm not talking about her Neil Lane bracelet.

The singer has reunited with her former love, Chris Brown, who was convicted of domestic assault against her a few years ago. Rihanna feels it's her life and, if it doesn't work out, her mistake. She's owning the decision, but she's still a role model to millions of people. She may not want to be, but she is and she's reaping a lot from that privilege. If she and Chris Brown want to be together again, that's her decision, but they BOTH need to be responsible and answer to the people paying for their albums and coming to their tours.

There. Ready to step down off my soap box.

Did you watch the 2013 Grammys? Any hits or misses in the fashions? What about the performances? What do you think about Rihanna and Chris Brown?

Make sure you join me next month for my Oscar recap, the ceremony and the fashions!!
